9-1-1 Service and VoIP

What is VoIP? It is a new type of telephone service where phone calls are made over the Internet using a special adapter and broadband Internet access, and it is competing heavily with traditional phone service. The appeal of the service is flat rate pricing and expanded features. However, a major concern, which has been highlighted in recent news stories, is how 9-1-1 works with this new service.

If you considering subscribing or you already have subscribed to this new service, you need to be aware that dialing 911 may not work. You must specifically check with your service provider to find out what their policies and procedures are. Furthermore, you may need to take action by registering with your provider, so that 911 calls will go through.
